College of Medicine Alumni Council April Meeting

Register for the Alumni Council April Meeting

From the President

Fellow Alumni Council Members,

I hope you and your families enjoyed the holiday season!

Our next Alumni Council meeting should be a great one in another beautiful location.

As many of you remember, the Office of Alumni & Annual Giving has gone GREEN. Registration for the meeting and all meeting materials are online. I encourage you to explore the links at right and take a look at all of the offerings, and register now for our Council Meeting.

The Myrtle Beach area, also known as the Grand Strand, is one of the premier family and beach vacation destinations in the United States. Myrtle Beach also has a storybook history. Dozens of books have been written about long-lost Indian tribes, colorful pirates, and roaming ghosts. Endless attractions, events, and dining options make this gorgeous city the perfect getaway for people of all ages. I hope you will take in as much of this wonderful city as you can during our time together. There are a few special events that have been added to the April meeting schedule—a Health Science Center Alumni Reception and the Tour of Brookgreen Gardens.

Due to the popularity of the Welcoming of New Members & Deans’ Roundtable and to allow all subcommittees ample time to meet, our meeting schedule has changed. The Welcoming of New Members & Deans’ Roundtable is scheduled from 4:00-6:30 p.m. Thursday. All members are encouraged to attend this event, which will be an opportunity for us to get updates from all three College of Medicine campuses.

The Advocacy, Development and Programming Sub-Committees will meet Friday from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Subcommittee reports will be given at the Council meeting on Saturday morning.

The Nominating Committee will meet in the hotel on Friday from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to select the 2013 recipient(s) of the College of Medicine Outstanding Alumni Award and to review outstanding vacancies on the Council. Dr. Bob Kerlan, as President-Elect, serves as chair of this committee. Prior to the April meeting, committee members will receive an information packet that includes a list of nominees for the awards.

Please take time to MAKE AT LEAST ONE NOMINATION FOR THE 2013 OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD. ALL NOMINATIONS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY, March 1.

On Friday evening, all Council members and spouses are invited as guests of the University for the Alumni Council Reception & Dinner at Ocean Club Grand Dunes, which I am hosting. The Ocean Club is within walking distance of the Marriott and offers a beautiful backdrop of the beach.

The Executive Committee of the Council will meet on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. to review the Council agenda and discuss business matters. This meeting will include breakfast.

Council members and spouses are invited to the College of Medicine Alumni Council Breakfast on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Council meeting from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Spouse/Alumni Activities

Myrtle Beach is a city with “something for everyone,” and we want to make sure that Council members and their spouses have an opportunity to experience as much of the culture as possible during the weekend. Please feel free to explore the city, spend a relaxing afternoon at the spa, play a round of golf, or doing a little shopping.

The Office of Alumni and Annual Giving is hosting an Alumni Reception for all Health Science Center graduates in the Myrtle Beach area on the evening of Thursday, April 11. Almost 100 Health Science Center alumni live in the area. I encourage you to attend this event and serve as ambassadors for the College of Medicine and the Health Science Center.

Following the Council meeting, everyone is encouraged to take a tour of Brookgreen Gardens. If you love art, gardening, history, or animals, this tour is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. I promise you the 45-minute bus ride is well worth it. The cost, which includes admission and transportation, is $30 per person

Making Your Hotel Reservations

We ask that you make your hotel reservations at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grand Dunes no later than Friday, March 15. Please request the University of Tennessee/Medicine Alumni Block when you call the hotel at (800) 228-9290. (Rates start at $169 and parking is $18 per day for valet and free self-parking).

You can also make your hotel reservations online »

Please make your reservations at the conference hotel to ensure that the Council picks up the contracted number of hotel rooms in order to avoid a financial penalty to the University.

If you have any questions regarding plans for this meeting, please call or e-mail Chandra Tuggle in the UT Alumni Office at 800-733-0482 / toll free or 901-448-5042 or ctuggle@utfi.org.

I look forward to seeing you in beautiful Myrtle Beach!

Thomas A. Whitaker, MD
