The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) today announced Charles
J. Broussard, BSPharm, MEd, FAPhA, of Maineville, Ohio, as the 2013
recipient of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management
(APhA-APPM) Distinguished Achievement Award in Service. Broussard was
selected in recognition of his significant contributions in the area of
substance abuse education and assistance, providing and maintaining the www.usaprn.org website which is invaluable to the pharmacist and student pharmacist recovery efforts of APhA and of the profession.
The APhA-APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Service recognizes
an individual who has made significant or sustained contributions in the
area of service to their community, their state or the national level.
Broussard will be officially recognized during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition
in Los Angeles, March 1-4, 2013. The APhA awards and honors program is
the most comprehensive recognition program in the profession of
pharmacy.
Broussard has been a staff pharmacist at Mercy Health - Fairfield
Hospital since August 1987. He has been involved in the field of
chemical dependency as an educator, counselor and consultant for the
past 30 years. He serves on the Advisory Council and Summer School
Faculty of the University of Utah – School on Alcoholism and Other Drug
Dependencies in Salt Lake City and is the editor of a recovery website
for pharmacists and student pharmacists: www.usaprn.org.
A colleague nominated Broussard stating, “Charlie has a passion for
the profession of pharmacy and its members. He has dedicated himself to
the wellness of pharmacists and student pharmacists, especially those
recovering from alcoholism and drug dependencies. His experience and
service have been invaluable both in his role as co-section leader at
the APhA-sponsored Pharmacy Section at the University of Utah School on
Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies and his role as the innovator,
editor, sponsor and webmaster of the usaprn.org website. This site
serves as the single most authoritative source of information concerning
pharmacist assistance programs throughout the country (both pharmacist
recovery networks and pharmacist support group meetings). The website is
an invaluable resource to the community of recovering pharmacists as
well as to those who support their recovery.”
Broussard earned his BSPharm from the University of Tennessee-Health
Science Center and his MEd in Agency & Community Counseling -
Specialty Chemical Dependency from Xavier University. Broussard has
received several awards including the Beal Award from the Ohio
Pharmacists Association (2005), the APhA-APPM Merit Award (2008); the
Linwood F. Tice Friend of the APhA-ASP Award (2009) and the University
of Utah School of Medicine - Ewart A. Swinyard Award (2011). He is a
member of APhA, Ohio Pharmacists Association, Ohio Society of Health
Systems Pharmacists, Greater Cincinnati Society of Health-System
Pharmacists, National Catholic Council on Alcoholism and Related Drug
Problems
Another colleague noted, “Charlie is one of the most dedicated
professionals with whom I’ve ever been associated in his passion for
educating and helping student pharmacists and pharmacists understand
addiction and the effect this disease can have within the profession and
upon those the profession serves. While never in recovery from
addiction himself, he has shown to me and to countless others that he
can and does live his life as one of service to those who unfortunately
experience the disease.”
