Thanks to the generosity of UTHSC College of Medicine alumni and friends, an endowed student scholarship fund has been created in honor of Dr. Hershel “Pat” Wall. Support in the amount of $50,000 from several College of Medicine alumni and their families have enabled UTHSC to endow the Dr. Hershel P. Wall Endowed Scholarship, which will be able to be awarded as soon as Fall 2013.
Recently named Chancellor Emeritus this past summer, Dr. Wall has left an enduring legacy at the Health Science Center and the College of Medicine. A 1960 graduate of the UTHSC College of Medicine, Dr. Wall has served UTHSC in a variety of leadership roles, including UTHSC chancellor and Dean of the College of Medicine. He continues to assist with fundraising and alumni efforts for the UT Foundation, and in 2008, the Dr. Hershel P. Wall Legacy Society was created to honor those who have left UTHSC in their estate plans.
“Dr. Wall is Volunteer medicine,” said Dr. Joseph DeLozier, a 1982 graduate of the UTHSC College of Medicine and donor to this effort. “He is an example to doctors and our society of what we should all be about – unconditional giving to his students, colleagues, patients, friends, and even strangers. There will be others to follow, but he has created the path and the standard, all out of love.”
DeLozier’s wife, Dr. Jan S. DeLozier, is also a 1982 graduate of the UTHSC College of Medicine, and the couple’s daughter, Meg, recently began medical school at UTHSC.
Joining the DeLozier family in support of this effort were Dr. J. Stephen Rich, a 1974 graduate of the UTHSC College of Medicine, and his wife, Susan Rich.
Said Dr. Rich, “Dr. Hershel Wall was the most influential professor of my medical school career. He instilled a steady calm, he inspired confidence, and he fueled a desire for knowledge. I have always known that I could count on Dr. Wall’s kindness and wisdom for guidance and I am grateful to have him as both a friend and a mentor.”
“By providing scholarships for medical students, this effort simultaneously honors my mentor and positively impacts future graduates from the UTHSC College of Medicine. I can think of no better investment.”
It is the hope of the DeLozier and Rich families that the fund will be able to grow significantly through additional philanthropy and continued investments from alumni and friends who were also positively impacted by Dr. Wall.
